VW Arteon Air Conditioning Losing Its Cool

Having the confidence to get a second opinion is sometimes not given enough credit.  I mean, how often do you have a problem with something, speak to an advisor and then want to find a specialist to make sure you are getting it right?

Luckily, Mr Schofield was confident and didn’t feel pressured into making an on-the-spot decision about his air conditioning repair by the main VW dealer.  That’s where we come in.

Mr Schofield came to us for a second opinion on the air conditioning of his 2018 VW Arteon R-Line.  The client had taken his Arteon to the main dealer after he noticed his air conditioning was no longer working.  No cold air was coming through the system and given that the car was only 3 years old, the client knew something was wrong.

Having looked at the VW Arteon, the main dealer advised that their assessment was that the air conditioning condenser was at fault and therefore needed replacing.  The client received a quote from the VW dealer of £1600 to complete the repair.  Mr Schofield advised that he would like to get a second opinion.

We’re here for you

Having had his VW Arteon checked at the dealer, the client then brought the vehicle to us.  Known as German Vehicle Specialists servicing vehicles in the Thatcham and Newbury area, the client believed we were best equipped to provide that second opinion on his broken air conditioning.

We started off by completing an air con performance assessment on Mr Schofield’s VW Arteon.  Using our unique evaluation process in conjunction with VW technical information, we were able to trace back along the whole system and see if we could locate any faults.

A lot of people think that the air conditioning unit is located in the cabin of the car, because this is where it keeps you cool.  But in reality, to gain access to the multitude of air con components, you need to get under the bonnet and remove various parts including the bumper.

So, our technicians removed the front bumper of the car to check for any problems with the wiring and air con system.  We drained the refrigerant from the system and then carried out a series of leak tests to see if any gas was escaping from the system.

The client advised that although he had received a quote from the VW dealer, he came to Fergies for our advice as German Vehicle Specialists. He also advised that our convenient location was key for him, as well as our honest feedback.  The client advised that the quote he had received from the VW dealer suggested 9 hours of labour costs.

We were able to then confirm with the client that the diagnosis from the VW dealer was right and the air conditioning condenser needed replacing.  We provided the client with our report and quote and the client decided to choose Fergies to fix his VW Arteon.

Let’s chill

Having completed the assessment and check on the air conditioning system already, we were able to complete the fix straight away.

We replaced the condenser, along with all new seals.  We put the system back together and filled it with refrigerant.

Poor handling and management of refrigerant can have a negative impact on the environment and is one of the reasons for global warming. We take our responsibilities very seriously here at Fergies – that’s why our technicians are all accredited in the safe handling of these chemicals….it’s also the reason we have a fleet of electric courtesy cars!

Whilst Mr Schofield’s VW was in our care he requested that we completed a full safety assessment of the vehicle.

The safety of our clients is our priority, so we undertook a series of safety checks whilst the VW Arteon was with us. This meant that we were able to identify a potential issue with the wheel alignment and ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems).

Correct wheel alignment can stop unnecessary wear and tear on the tyres, which can cause a potential MOT fail and/or an accident.  Advanced driver assistance systems, or ADAS, is the term used to describe the growing number of safety functions designed to improve driver, passenger and pedestrian safety by reducing both the severity and number of vehicle accidents. ADAS can warn drivers of potential dangers, intervene to help the driver remain in control and, if necessary, reduce the severity of an accident if it can’t be avoided.

Having explained all this to the client, he gave us the green light to carry out the remedial work.  We completed a wheel alignment and an ADAS adjustment to make sure all the systems were fault free.
