BMW 420 Faulty Angel Eye Headlight not working

In this blog post, we will be discussing a common issue among BMW 420 owners – the faulty Angel Eye headlight. The Angel Eye headlight, also known as the Halo ring headlight, is a distinctive feature of BMW’s headlights and adds a sleek and modern look to the vehicle.

However, some owners have reported that the Angel Eye headlight stops working, leaving them with a headlight that is not only less visually appealing but also potentially dangerous.

In this post, we will explore the causes of the issue and provide solutions for fixing the faulty Angel Eye headlight. Whether you’re a current owner or considering purchasing a BMW, this post will provide valuable information on how to address this common problem.

BMW Angel Eye Fault

At Fergies German Specialist Garage, we have a wealth of experience working with BMWs and have become familiar with the common issues and problems that arise with these vehicles.

When a client came to us with a BMW 420, seeking assistance with its headlights, we were eager to help. The client had already replaced the headlight driver module, but despite this, the headlights were still not functioning. He brought it to our specialists at Fergies BMW Garage to have the module programmed in, in the hope that it would solve the problem.

However, even after programming the new headlight driver module, the headlights were still not working. This prompted our team to further investigate the issue to find the root cause and find a solution.

What do we do different?

At Fergies, our BMW Service team employs a 15-step evaluation process and draws on our extensive experience to thoroughly understand the vehicle and identify the underlying issue. We then take steps to completely resolve the problem.

After conducting an initial examination of the BMW, we discovered two faults: a coding error with the right headlight and an additional, previously undetected malfunction in the LED unit for the same headlight. However, the rest of the car was in great shape, so we focused on getting the customer back on the road with a fully operational BMW.

Our BMW specialist technicians attempted to code and perform a software update on the new driver module, but it still wouldn’t code. So we turned to our previous experience working with BMW angel eye headlights, as well as technical data provided by BMW.

BMW Angel Eye Fault

After removing the right headlight, our technicians discovered that the client had recently installed the wrong driver module. As a BMW garage, we only use genuine BMW parts for all of our service and repairs, so we replaced the driver module with an authentic BMW part. This allowed us to successfully code the module as requested.

Following our 15-step evaluation process, we were able to confirm that the headlight had been coded correctly and the driver module was functioning properly. However, there was still an issue with the LED section of the headlight.

Our next step was to conduct a thorough visual inspection and electrical check of all the wiring within the headlight unit. We found that all the wiring was in good working order, indicating that the issue was likely with the LED unit itself.

To further understand the problem, we removed the bumper and accessed the LED modules at the bottom of the headlights. Our BMW specialists discovered evidence of water damage in the LED modules, which explained the fault.

To confirm the issue, we switched the LED modules between the right and left headlights, re-tested and found that the LED module was indeed damaged. The problem had now shifted to the left headlight!

We replaced the faulty LED module with genuine BMW Service parts, reinstalled the front bumper, and recoded the angel eye headlights. We then performed another diagnostic check to confirm that the update had resolved all the faults.

The BMW 420 was returned to the client within 24 hours, and they were able to get back to their business with the peace of mind that the problem had been fully resolved.
