Fixing a Mercedes A180 Sport Steering Lock Fault
For many years, Mercedes has provided high-quality luxury cars with sleek designs, advanced technology, and powerful engines. The Mercedes A180 Sport is a perfect example of this. There have, however, been reports of steering lock faults in the A180, and we were recently visited by a customer experiencing this exact issue.
Our team at Fergies understands the frustration and disappointment that can result from unresolved vehicle problems, especially when previous attempts have failed. Our expertise and experience as an independent Mercedes-Benz garage allowed us to identify the problem with the A180 Sport and come up with a solution that worked.
Read on to find out how…

What Is the Purpose of a Steering Lock?
When a vehicle is switched off, the steering lock prevents the steering wheel from turning. The steering lock is automatically activated after Mercedes-Benz vehicles are turned off and the key removed from the ignition.
You can also manually activate the system by pressing a button or switch on the centre console or dashboard. By immobilising the steering system, it makes steering and driving a vehicle difficult for thieves.
What Happens if the Steering Lock Fails?
If the steering lock malfunctions, the steering wheel is locked in place, making steering difficult, if not impossible. A malfunctioning steering lock can be dangerous, so you should act as soon as possible.
Whenever our customers contact us with this issue, we recommend that they first try to unlock it themselves by disengaging and reengaging the steering lock, as follows:
- Ensure that the vehicle is parked and not moving.
- Next, the key should be inserted into the ignition.
- Keep the key inserted while gently turning the steering wheel.
- Check for a click or release, indicating the steering lock has been disengaged.
- The steering wheel should be centred to align the wheels.
- Hold the steering wheel centred while turning the ignition key back to the “Lock” or “Off” position to re engage the steering lock.
Our Mercedes specialist at Fergies will be able to provide you with expert assistance and guidance if this approach does not work for you. Give us a call right away for a reliable fix.
Mercedes A180 Sport Steering Lock Fault Fix
A number of factors can cause the steering lock malfunction in a Mercedes A180 Sport.
There are two main parts to the steering lock system in Mercedes-Benz vehicles: the steering lock actuator and the steering lock module. The actuator is an electric motor that physically engages or releases the steering lock, while the module is similar to a computer that controls the actuator. This module is responsible for determining when the steering should be locked or unlocked based on signals received from various sensors in the vehicle. These components work together to secure the steering wheel when the car is off.
You might have problems with your Mercedes-Benz steering lock if your actuator, module, or wiring is malfunctioning. It may even be an electrical problem with another component. Our Mercedes-Benz experts at Fergies will be able to accurately diagnose and correct the problem with your vehicle.
At Fergies, our Mercedes technicians use a multi-step diagnostic process to determine the root cause of the problem and decipher if it is mechanical or electrical. We will also examine other parts of the vehicle, to ensure that there are no other underlying problems causing the steering lock to malfunction.
When diagnosing a vehicle, like our customer’s Mercedes A180 Sport, we look for clues to help us understand what may be wrong. In this case, three main clues were found:
- There was a problem with the steering lock
- There was a problem with the immobiliser
- There was a problem recognising the key
Based on this information, our Mercedes expert technician began identifying the root cause of the problem.
- Inspection: We visually examined the steering lock and surrounding area for signs of wear and tear, as well as corrosion or damage to the wiring and connections.
- Diagnostic evaluation: We analysed all diagnostic fault codes stored in the car’s computer system using Mercedes dealer-level software. In the A180, there were no fault codes, which would have helped us to narrow down the investigation.
- System test: Using the dealer-level software, we checked the steering lock control module’s communication with other control units in the car, established its inputs and outputs, and verified its supply voltage.
- Actuator test: Finally, we tested the steering lock actuator to ensure it worked properly and could lock and unlock the steering wheel.
Our tests revealed that the steering lock control module was defective. Due to this, our expert technician replaced the steering lock control module with a genuine Mercedes-Benz part. The parts we use at Fergies are of the best quality available, and we take pride in providing high-quality service and expertise.
Identifying and Resolving the Problem
Due to the specialised equipment and knowledge needed to complete this fix successfully, Mercedes-Benz steering lock control modules should only be replaced by expert technicians.
The steps for replacing the module vary depending on the model and year of the Mercedes, so our Mercedes-Benz specialist followed these steps for the A180 Sport:
- Diagnose the problem: Our Mercedes technician correctly diagnosed the problem before replacing the steering lock control module.
- Remove the module: The steering lock control module was then removed from the vehicle by our technician. Models vary in where they are located. You can find them under the steering wheel, in the dashboard, or in the engine compartment.
- Replace the module: Our technician installed the new module after removing the old one.
- Re-program the module: After installing the new module, our technician reprogrammed it so that it would be recognised by the vehicle’s computer system and function correctly.
- Test drive the vehicle: Next, our technician drove the vehicle to ensure that the steering lock and immobiliser were working properly.
- Clear fault codes: Finally, our technician cleared fault codes from the vehicle’s ECM (Engine Control Module) to ensure that everything was working properly.
The steering lock module is programmed to recognise the unique code of the lock cylinder installed in the vehicle. Replacement of the lock cylinder will result in a different code that the steering lock module will not initially recognise.
In order for the steering lock module to function properly after replacing the lock cylinder, it must be recoded. In the event that the steering lock module is not re-coded after replacing the lock cylinder, the safety of your Mercedes-Benz may be compromised.
