Mercedes A & B Service
If you’re looking to keep your Mercedes in top shape, it requires the right service plan.
You’re probably thinking, “The right service plan… aren’t they all the same?” – Not exactly; when it comes to your Mercedes, it’s a little more complex.
In 2009, Mercedes rolled out a clear maintenance guide, suggesting when and what service your car might need. They’ve made it easy by labelling them as Service A and Service B, ensuring your Mercedes gets the right level of care as and when it’s needed.
On top of this guidance, your Mercedes will usually give you a nudge when it’s time for a check-up and may even tell you which type of service you need.
In this guide, we’ll break down the difference between Service A and Service B and show how Fergies can handle all of your Mercedes maintenance needs better than dealership value.

Mercedes-Benz A Service
After owning your Mercedes for one year or reaching 10,000 miles, it’s time for the Mercedes A Service. This is a more basic service essential to keeping your vehicle running smoothly. Once you’ve had your first A Service, it’s required every two years.
So, what’s included in the Mercedes A Service at Fergies?
- Oil Change – We’ll replace the synthetic motor oil to ensure your engine parts are well-lubricated and cooled.
- Filter Swap – Your oil filter gets swapped out to stop any nasty particles from harming your engine.
- Tyre Check – We’ll check your tyre pressure and adjust it if needed. This helps with fuel efficiency and stops your tyres from developing uneven wear, keeping you safe on the road.
- Brakes Inspection – Your brakes get a thorough inspection, ensuring everything’s working as it should be. Your safety is our top priority.
- Solve Warning Messages – If you’ve got a warning message lighting up your dashboard, we’ll reset it. And, of course, we’ll update your Mercedes’ service records or logbook once we’re done.
Mercedes-Benz B Service
A year after your Mercedes A Service or 20,000 miles (whichever comes first), it’s time to bring your Mercedes in for the B Service. This type of Mercedes service is more thorough and ensures your vehicle continues to perform optimally.
The A Service and B Service generally alternate each year.
When your Mercedes is ready for the B Service, a notification will appear on your dashboard, signalling the B Service is due.
Here’s what is included in the B Service at Fergies:
- Oil Change – First, we’ll swap out your old synthetic motor oil to keep the engine running smoothly.
- Oil Filter Replacement – Next, we’ll fit a fresh oil filter, ensuring harmful contaminants can’t reach your engine.
- Dust Filter Change – The Cabin Dust/Combination Filter will be replaced, ensuring you breathe easily without external dust or pollen getting in.
- Tyre Inspection – We’ll check all your tyres, adjusting the pressure for maximum fuel efficiency, balanced wear, and safety.
- Brakes Check – The brakes will undergo a comprehensive check to ensure they’re in top working condition.
- Address Warning Messages – All dashboard warning lights are addressed and cleared, and we ensure your Mercedes’ service history or logbook is updated.
Service Levels A and B for Older Mercedes Models
Older Mercedes models sometimes have more tailored A and B Services. If you see a dashboard message like “A7 Service” or “B4 Service”, it’s signalling that your vehicle needs specific maintenance.
Here’s what these specialised service notifications mean:
- A0 or B0 Service – Your Mercedes sunroof needs a clean and lubrication. Some models may also need a spark plug change.
- A1 or B1 Service – Time to replace the brake fluid.
- A2 or B2 Service – Alongside brake fluid replacement, the sunroof needs cleaning and lubrication.
- A3 or B3 Service – Your Mercedes air filter and spark plugs need replacing.
- A4 or B4 Service – This covers air filter renewal, spark plug change, and sunroof maintenance.
- A5 or B5 Service – A combination of air filter replacement, spark plug update, and brake fluid refresh.
- A6 or B6 Service – Involves changing the air filter, spark plugs, brake fluid, and sunroof servicing.
- A7 or B7 Service – Focuses on the automatic transmission with an oil change and a new filter.
- A8 or B8 Service – The transmission gets attention with an oil change and new filter, plus the sunroof is serviced.
- A9 or B9 Service – The service involves transmission care (oil and filter) and a brake fluid update.

Mercedes C Class Servicing Case Study
Our client recently brought their Mercedes C Class to us for a standard B Service.
We happily lent them a courtesy car to use during the service period to ensure they weren’t left stranded.
During the vehicle’s B Service, our Mercedes specialists carefully reviewed the following:
- All lighting systems, windows, wipers, and mirrors.
- Vital safety features like the horn, hazard lights, air conditioning, and seat belts.
- Key components such as the steering, suspension, and drive systems.
- The condition of brake pads, discs, and brake fluid levels.
- Under the bonnet to check for any irregularities or leaks and replace elements like the oil filter, spark plugs, air filter, and drive belts with authentic Mercedes parts, if needed.
- Under vehicle checks including removing the trays, draining the oil, and inspecting the transmission for any signs of leaks, rust, or corrosion.
- The tyre tread depth and pressure, as well as ensuring the wheels were properly aligned.
- The antifreeze level and topped it up if necessary.
- And, of course, refreshing the engine oil and updating the service history.
Our Mercedes specialist noticed uneven wear on the Mercedes C Class’ brakes during this inspection.
Our experts recommended an immediate brake pad and disc replacement as well as a wheel alignment, to ensure that this issue didn’t happen again.
It was a good thing we spotted this in time; it could have been dangerous for them, placing them at risk of an accident.
Once our client gave the go-ahead, our Mercedes expert fitted brand new brake pads and discs to restore the brakes back to full function. They then performed the wheel alignment.
While at it, they checked for potential suspension damage, inflated the Mercedes tyres to the correct pressure, changed the oil and filter, and reset the maintenance counter.
After completing the above, they updated the vehicle’s service record.
We always go above and beyond for our customers. While we stick to the manufacturer’s specifications for every service or repair, we also perform additional checks to ensure your car runs as it’s supposed to.
