Audi A6 Power Loss

Audi A6 Power Loss Issue

Audis are top-tier German automobiles recognised for their lavish design, excellent engineering, and superb performance.

So, what do you do if your Audi starts losing power and isn’t performing as it should?

Recently, a customer brought their Audi A6 to our experts at Fergies, and unfortunately, their vehicle had an engine management light illuminated, coupled with a power loss.

Fortunately, our team at Fergies is well-versed in handling Audi power loss issues and was confident they could solve the problem during the first fix.

What we found

Upon initial examination, our Audi experts visually confirmed that the vehicle’s engine management light lit up as soon as our customer’s A6 was started.

A test drive also confirmed the fact that the Audi A6 had a significant loss of power, with the vehicle unable to exceed 40 mph and felt unusually sluggish. Our team suspected that the car had entered ‘limp mode.’

Limp mode is a protective mechanism found in most modern vehicles. Your vehicle will enter limp mode when a problem is detected, preventing any further damage from occurring to your car.

While in limp mode, it’s typical for cars to experience a reduction in power and speed, with non-essential functions shutting down.

The reasons behind the Audi A6’s limp mode could range from faulty sensors and transmission problems to low fluid levels.

No matter the cause, it’s essential to address these issues right away to avoid the problem worsening and prevent hefty future repair bills. Not to mention the inconvenience of being stuck with your Audi in limp mode, which isn’t great.

After the initial inspection, our expert technicians at Fergie’s recognised a more thorough investigation would be necessary to reveal the cause of the vehicle’s limp mode.

The Diagnosis

Before any extensive examinations were performed, our Audi specialists conducted a diagnostic test to see if any fault codes were present.

The diagnostic test revealed the following fault code:

P0237 – Manifold Pressure/Boost Sensor G31 – Signal Too Low

This code might not mean much to the average person, but to our experienced Audi specialists, it provided a clear starting point for deeper investigations.

At Fergie’s, we pride ourselves on our comprehensive 15-step diagnostic process designed to pinpoint and solve your vehicle’s issues during the first fix, saving you time, money and stress. There’s no need for repeat visits when you come to us.

Now that our experts had a direction and the knowledge that the fault lay with the sensors, our specialists could proceed with a more in-depth analysis using an oscilloscope.

An oscilloscope is a specialised tool that displays voltage levels across various vehicle components. By interpreting these readings, our technicians could find the root cause of the problem and rule out any wiring issues that could lead to a misdiagnosis.

The oscilloscope readings confirmed that the signals from the Audi A6’s Engine Control Unit (ECU) were accurate, eliminating the possibility of a wiring fault and confirming that the Audi A6 sensor was defective.

Conducting a waveform test between components is a step that other garages might not perform. While, in this instance, the sensor was the culprit, it could just as easily have been a wiring issue.

It’s one of the many reasons why Fergie’s stands out from the rest. We always conduct a comprehensive investigation to eliminate all possible causes, ensuring you don’t waste time and money on unnecessary repairs.

You always get better than dealership care for better than dealer value. What’s not to like?

With the new testing complete, our specialists determined that the client’s Audi A6 required a new turbocharger pressure sensor.

Fixing the Audi A6

After finding the exact cause of the Audi A6’s power loss, our Audi specialists contacted the client to relay our findings.

At Fergie’s, communication is key. We only begin fixing your vehicle with your permission. The power (excuse the pun) is always in your hands, from start to finish.

Once our client green-lit our suggested fix, our Audi experts wasted no time sourcing a replacement part.

As your local independent Audi specialist, we always use genuine Audi or high-quality alternative parts for your vehicle, ensuring your Audi gets the quality it needs to run like new.

After fitting the new turbocharger pressure sensor, our team conducted an in-depth inspection to rule out any additional issues, confirming that the A6 was now back in complete working condition.

Before we handed the client their keys, we performed a comprehensive road test to double-check the vehicle was in prime condition.

With the diagnostic test showing no remaining fault codes and no other concerns, we felt confident that the Audi A6 was ready for the client.

And the best part? The Audi A6 was FINALLY out of limp mode.

Our client was over the moon to have their vehicle running how it should and was even happier to have their car back so quickly. That’s something the main Audi dealership can struggle with.

At Fergie’s, we pride ourselves on delivering first-rate customer service at better than dealer value. So you save time, money, and stress with us. What’s not to love?
