VW Coolant Levels Dropping
If you need help with your Volkswagen then you have arrived at the right place. At Fergies, our team of experts are on hand to maintain and fix your VW – no matter which model you drive.
Our recent customer knew this and visited us after noticing a coolant warning light appear on their Volkswagen Golf R dashboard. The coolant was topped up, but levels soon dropped again, and it was very frustrating.
Coolant is a liquid that flows through the engine to help maintain a certain temperature. Coolant also protects the engine from overheating and acts as a lubricant to help move parts more freely. In the UK it’s commonly known as anti-freeze. It helps prevent damage to the cylinders, pistons, head gasket and water pump too. If the coolant level drops then it could spell danger which may lead to high repair bills.
Our first step was to diagnose the coolant leak. We performed a series of thorough checks around the engine bay to see where it may be leaking from. Our 15-step diagnostics process ensures that nothing is left to chance for our clients. We set out to use our diagnostics machine to scan for any fault codes that might give us some clues.
The scan gave us an error code of:
- P2681: Activation of coolant bypass valve, interruption
This error code might not make sense to the average car owner, but to our team, this proved to be very helpful. We can narrow down the problem and use our advanced know-how to pressure test the cooling system and visually inspect the engine. This step confirmed that the coolant was leaking from the thermostat housing and water pump.
The housing was taken apart to check for leaks from within the thermostat. The control board of the thermostat was the reason behind the fault code and the plug of the actuator linked to the board was wet.
We now understand why there was a leak, so let’s begin fixing it!
VW Coolant Fix at Fergies
The thermostat housing was the first area that needed attention. To help fix the leaking coolant issue, the team began by replacing the thermostat housing water pump, drive belt and union. When we’d completed the fix, we needed to test the system again.
We refilled the cooling system with brand new VW-recommended coolant, and we set up the electronically controlled thermostat housing. Once this was reset to the manufacturer guidelines, the tests proved a success and there were no longer any leaks coming from that area of the car.
Thanks to our team of VW specialists, Fergies was on hand to quickly address the customer’s coolant issue in their Golf R. We were able to hand back the keys to our client’s performance vehicle in under 24 hours!
