Mercedes AdBlue System Error

Mercedes AdBlue System Error

Mercedes is a world-renowned brand known for developing some of the best vehicles on the market, including the Mercedes GLC. It offers excellent performance, luxury, dependability and comfort.

However, it’s not immune to the occasional problem, as our recent client discovered.

Our client brought their GLC to our Mercedes specialists at Fergies when their dashboard showed an AdBlue system error warning message.

Your vehicle’s AdBlue system is crucial for reducing emissions. If it fails, it can put your vehicle into “limp mode, ” drastically lowering its performance.

Thankfully, our client didn’t waste any time getting their Mercedes GLC to us, and our experts were confident they could resolve the problem.

Identified Faults

At Fergies, we use an in-depth 15-step diagnostic process to dig deep and find the root cause of your vehicle’s problem. This allows us to provide you with a comprehensive, first-time fix.

Firstly, our experts wanted to confirm Mercedes GLC’s problem, as the real issue may often differ from the one reported by the client.

Our Mercedes specialist conducted a thorough visual examination of the vehicle, inspecting under the car, within the engine bay, and around the AdBlue tank. With no leaks detected in the system, it was clear the complication was located elsewhere.

We then reviewed the dashboard warnings and uncovered that the vehicle’s system was unable to detect the AdBlue fluid level, posing potential future issues.

It was evident that the client’s GLC was in need of some critical maintenance and repairs to get the vehicle back to complete working condition.

Diagnostic Procedure

Our Mercedes experts use a 15-step diagnostic process to quickly identify the core of any fault your vehicle is having and implement an effective solution. This approach ensures no detail is overlooked during the diagnostic phase, saving you time, money and stress.

You always get a first-time fix with us.

During our process, a full vehicle software scan using the Xentry software—the same advanced technology used by Mercedes-Benz dealerships—took place.

As your local independent Mercedes specialists, we’ve got access to the same level of technical information as the main dealerships. This allows us to provide you with dealership-level servicing at better value.

The diagnostic scan returned the following fault codes:

  • P246309 – Indicating an issue with the particulate filter’s soot content in diesel or petrol models.
  • P20F500 – Pointing to excessively high AdBlue consumption.

These codes indicated a malfunction in the AdBlue system that required urgent attention to prevent the issue from worsening.

While fault codes offer a clue to the problem’s nature and location, they require a deeper inspection to resolve the issue entirely. Fortunately, our team is highly experienced in everything Mercedes and knew what to do next.

Following the fault code results, our technicians meticulously tested the data inputs and outputs from the AdBlue system to rule out any leaks or electrical issues.

The live data results were fine, with the Engine Control Unit (ECU) receiving accurate AdBlue signals. Subsequent tests on the fluid levels and quality confirmed the diagnosis.

The issue was traced to an overflow of AdBlue fluid from the container, which interfered with the ECU’s ability to accurately measure the fluid level.

Had this issue not been addressed promptly, it could have led to severe consequences for the Mercedes GLC, such as the dreaded limp mode, or worse, the vehicle might have stopped working altogether.

Fortunately, our client brought their vehicle to Fergies at the right time, preventing the issue from causing long-term damage.

The Problem and Solution

Once our Mercedes specialist pinpointed the problem, they called the client to discuss their findings.

At Fergies, you’re always kept in the know from start to finish. We only begin working on your vehicle when you give us the green light. You’re always in complete control.

Once we had our client’s approval, our experts quickly solved the problem. They drained the excess AdBlue fluid to the recommended level, setting aside the surplus for proper disposal later.

Following this, our technician recalibrated and tested the Mercedes GLC AdBlue system. Thankfully, the tests were successful, indicating only one remaining task: clearing the existing error codes and performing a system recheck.

Our Mercedes expert erased the old fault codes and scanned for any new issues. The system was clear but highlighted the need for a software update on the vehicle, which our technician promptly performed.

After updating the software, our Mercedes expert took the GLC for a test drive to ensure everything worked as expected. The client’s vehicle functioned flawlessly, with no warning lights or error messages appearing on the dashboard.

Once confirmed that everything was in perfect order, we returned the fully serviced Mercedes GLC to our client, who was extremely satisfied with the service.
