On one drive, Mr J’s 2017 Land Rover Discovery Sport behaved exactly as it always had. By the next journey, warning lights had appeared on the dashboard, the vehicle had entered limp mode, and power had dropped significantly.

A change like that, arriving without warning, leaves any driver with questions. Was the car safe to keep driving? What had set the lights off? And was this the start of something more serious?

Mr J, from Newbury, got in touch with Fergies, Thatcham, looking for answers. The symptoms his Land Rover was showing pointed toward a deeper issue, and the cause needed to be established and put right.

He wanted clarity, along with a team that had the technical knowledge and structured approach to get to the bottom of it.

With that in mind, Mr J booked the Discovery Sport in with Fergies for a full technical evaluation.

Starting With the Blocked DPF Symptoms Mr J Reported

When the Discovery Sport arrived at Fergies, Thatcham, our first step was to listen carefully to Mr J and build a full picture of what had happened. We asked when the warning lights had first appeared, how the vehicle had behaved since, and whether anything had changed in how it was usually driven.

Short, stop-start journeys are one of the most common contributors to DPF issues, because they prevent the engine from reaching and holding the temperatures needed for regeneration. Understanding Mr J’s usual driving pattern was an important part of building that picture before any testing began.

With that background established, our technicians connected the vehicle to our dealer-level diagnostic equipment and carried out a full system scan. Among the stored codes, two were directly relevant to the blocked DPF symptoms:

  • Land Rover P2463 fault code P2463-00, indicating diesel particulate filter restriction due to soot accumulation. This code flagged that the DPF had accumulated soot beyond an acceptable level.
  • Land Rover P246B fault code P246B-00, indicating the vehicle conditions required for DPF regeneration had not been met. This meant the system had recognised that the conditions needed to trigger the self-cleaning process had not occurred.

Both codes pointed toward DPF issues, but the fault codes alone only told part of the story. To understand what had led to the DPF warning and related codes, and to make sure the correct repair was carried out, a closer inspection was needed.

From there, our technicians moved into a structured, step-by-step investigation to identify the root cause with confidence.

Narrowing Down the Cause of the Land Rover DPF Fault

The fault codes confirmed excessive soot loading in the DPF and that regeneration was not completing successfully. But to carry out an effective repair, our technicians needed to understand why the filter had reached that point. A Land Rover DPF fault can develop for several different reasons, and the right approach depends entirely on what is driving the problem. Each possible explanation was worked through in turn, ruling one out before moving to the next.

Step 1: DPF Inspection

Before investigating what had caused the soot to accumulate, our technicians first checked whether the DPF itself was still in a serviceable condition. A cracked or compromised filter substrate would change the repair approach entirely, potentially requiring replacement rather than cleaning.

  • The DPF was inspected and found to be structurally sound, with no signs of internal damage.
  • This confirmed the filter could be cleaned and restored to correct operation.

Step 2: Oil Level, Condition, and Oil Dilution Check

Our technicians examined the engine oil level and condition closely, paying particular attention to whether oil dilution was present. Oil dilution occurs when unburnt fuel passes the piston rings and enters the engine’s oil supply. This typically happens when DPF regeneration attempts fail to complete. During a regeneration attempt, the engine management system introduces additional fuel through late post-injection to raise exhaust gas temperatures. If the regeneration does not complete, some of that fuel can wash past the piston rings into the sump rather than being burnt off in the exhaust.

  • Oil dilution was identified on Mr J’s Discovery Sport.
  • Diluted oil degrades over time and can affect overall engine condition, while the underlying failure to regenerate meant soot continued to gather in the DPF with no way for the system to clear it.

With that identified, our technicians continued the inspection to establish whether this was the only contributing factor, or whether there was more to uncover.

Step 3: Air Filter Condition Check

The air filter was inspected next. A restricted air filter limits airflow into the engine, which can reduce combustion efficiency and increase particulate production. That places a greater load on the DPF over time.

  • The air filter was found to be in acceptable condition and was not a contributing factor.

Step 4: DPF Pressure Readings

Our technicians measured the differential pressure across the DPF using the dealer-level diagnostic equipment.

  • The readings were high, confirming the filter was carrying a significant soot load.
  • This aligned with the Land Rover P2463 fault code stored during the initial scan.

Step 5: Boost Leak Assessment

The intake and boost system was assessed for leaks. A boost leak reduces combustion efficiency and can accelerate the rate at which soot loads the DPF.

  • No leaks were found.

With all checks complete, the picture was clear. The DPF had been unable to regenerate, allowing soot to gather in the filter over time. The oil dilution found during the inspection was consistent with repeated failed regeneration attempts. That build-up had eventually reached the point where the DPF warning light on dashboard was triggered, the vehicle dropped into limp mode, and power was significantly reduced.

What It Took to Repair the Land Rover DPF Fault

With the root cause confirmed, our technicians contacted Mr J to explain the findings and outline the repair plan. Once he was happy to proceed, the work began.

Engine oil and filter change

The engine oil had become fuel-diluted through repeated failed regeneration attempts and was no longer providing adequate engine protection.

  • Our technicians removed the diluted oil and carried out a full engine oil and filter change.
  • The replacement oil was the correct Land Rover-specified oil for the Discovery Sport’s Ingenium diesel engine, applied in line with manufacturer standards.

Diesel particulate filter cleaning

With fresh oil in the engine, attention turned to the DPF. The filter had been confirmed as structurally sound, so diesel particulate filter cleaning was carried out to reduce the soot load before regeneration.

Service DPF regeneration and system reset

Once cleaned, a service regeneration was initiated using the manufacturer-level software.

  • Following the regeneration, relevant DPF adaptation and soot-loading values were reset in accordance with manufacturer procedures, ensuring the engine management system could accurately monitor the filter.
  • The fault memory was cleared and the system retested. No new fault codes returned.

Customer guidance

Frequent short journeys had contributed to the issue by preventing the DPF from regenerating effectively.

Our technicians explained the findings to Mr J and outlined the driving habits that would help support successful DPF regeneration going forward.

The Result: A Discovery Sport Running as It Should

Mr J’s 2017 Land Rover Discovery Sport left Fergies, Thatcham with full power restored and every dashboard warning light cleared. The vehicle was out of limp mode, and the blocked DPF symptoms that had brought it in had been fully resolved.
